What are the Official Charts, why do they matter, and how do I register?

Official Charts Company is the UK’s source for definitive music and video charts. According to their website, despite being “best known for the Official Singles Chart and the Official Artist Albums Chart, the Official Charts Company actually compiles more than 50 charts of different shapes, sizes and flavours – including a vast array of music genre charts and the Official Charts for the home entertainment industry, including the weekly Official Video Chart and the Official DVD and Blu-ray rundowns.“

Any music product that carries a UPC or EAN barcode and ISRC code is eligible to be tracked by the Official Charts. According to them, the Official Charts Company collect sales and streaming data from “all significant retailers/music services – including iTunes, Amazon, HMV, Google Play, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons, Spotify, Deezer and over 2,600 independent record and video shops. As a result, we estimate that we capture around 99% of all singles sold, 98% of all albums and over 90% of all videos/DVDs.”

In order to have a chance at making the Official Charts music or video charts, any release must be registered using EAN or UPC number (for the release; single, album versions, etc.) and ISRC codes (for the individual songs or videos). Without a proper registration with these codes, the sales & streams will not be counted, and will remain invisible to the system.

Please note, that BEFORE registering with the Official Charts, you must obtain your ISRC and UPC/EAN Codes.

Only after you have your codes purchased, can you start the Official Charts registration of your release (single, album versions, etc.), audio tracks, and videos.

At the time of this FAQ’s publication, Official Charts registration is still free of charge but involves relatively complex process. If you need assistance with this process, we can help. Contact us with details about your release(s).
